Seward Johnson’s second series, the popular Beyond the Frame group, is inspired by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterworks. The series made its debut at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and it continues to travel to museum venues across the country. These finely detailed vignettes allow visitors to step into the painting and stroll amid the life scale bronze figures, becoming part of the scene.
“I find it so moving to watch people interact with these sculptures. That is one thing that these pieces do — they invite an intimacy with the paintings that the paintings themselves don’t allow simply due to the limitation of scale, depth and access.” – Seward Johnson
